Ahmad Mazin Alshugairi is a Saudi Arabian citizen born in the year 1973 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Mazen Alshugairi and Affaf Ali (Worth, 2009). Alshugairi relocated to the US after his graduation from Manarat high school in the city of Jeddah. Back in high school, he received a Bachelor of Art in management systems. He later joined the University of California, Berkeley where he attained his Master degree in Business Administration. However, in the year 1996, he decided to go back home and work for his father in hi various business entities. Alshugairi divorced his first wife Yasmine and got married to Rola Doshisha as his second wife. Together they are blessed with two children Yousef and Ibrahim. Alshugairi is no ordinary Saudi Arabian citizen as he is a renown media figure who has made a difference in his society and the country at large.
Many people know him because of his personality as a media figure. After doing his father’s business for a while, he started his career in media in 2002 with the famous TV program “Yalla Shabab.” He also starred in other programs such as “A Travel with Shiekh Hamza Yusuf,” and “Law Kan Baninana.” Unlike other programs that he earlier started, Khawater or Thoughts is his popular television series where he is the host and presenter (Willett, 2010). The television series is more popular and beloved among the young people in the entire Middle East region. The television presenter is famous for his distinguished services in helping the youths grow in their faith. He does not only focus on faith issues among the young but also in enhancing their knowledge of varied fields and the world in general. Besides, he also helps them in the growth of in service as well as their purpose in making a difference in their society.
Young people are considered the most influential individuals in the community. This is because they are the future of various generations. Youths are also a hope of future development since they learn more from their adults, and as time goes by, they grow in knowledge and experience. Alshugairi’s current show is thus a favorite to many of the young individuals. A majority of them love it since most of the subjects that it tackles concern their daily lives and hence hold it in high reverence. According to one of the young viewer, he states that he is addicted to the Khawatar series as he watches it every Ramadan. The show does attract not only the young people but also other people in the society. Most people term it as an educative as well as entertaining television series since it covers all aspects of social, religious and other intellectual subjects. The host of the show presents the show in a compelling but relevant manner that it attracts individuals from different ages and background. Alshugairi encourages his viewers especially the youth to be more innovative in the ways they deal with various challenges they face in their daily lives.
The Arabian Business magazine recently recognized Alshugairi as one of the top influential people in Saudi Arabia. Apart from his famous television series, he is also an eloquent writer where he has published several books (Worth, 2009). They include books such as Kwawatar from Japan which tackles the topics he features in his television show in the fifth season. He has also written another book which is a memoir known as My Trip with Gandhi. Additionally, the survey done by the Arabian Business magazine ranked him in top 200 most influential Arab figures in the entire Arabian world. Besides, he has also won a media award in the third youth forum held in Jordan where he emerged the winner in the category of the Best youth media personality.
In most cases, first impressions matter a lot more especially to the television personalities. During his first appearance on television, Ahmad was dressed in an all-white gown and a headdress (Coleman, 2012). Taking up the microphone in his hands, he said to the audience that he had no prior training nor titles in issues with religion. He went on saying that he was not a sheik. Contrary to what he said, he presided over the session for the following two hours in a masterful manner as any other preacher could have done. During the meeting, he recalled the death of Prophet Muhammad with silent tears. He also drew several rounds of uproarious laughter during the period. He tackled several subjects including sectarianism as well as making a plea for equal treatment of the women in the society. He does not also shy away from talking about his life in a free manner. He comfortably discusses the wild seven years he spends in California as well as divorce and his family life.
A majority of individuals address Alsgugairi as a rising star in the new generation of the “satellite sheiks.” Unlike other television series, his show that is religion-themed has fueled a revival of the religious subject in the whole Arab world. Despite other satellite channels being addressing the theme of religion, his show stands out as the best. Most youths are after finding a religious identity and hence make up the majority of the khawatar’s audience (Worth, 2009). Another similarity of most of the young Arab citizens is that they are deeply alienated from the topic of politics as well as traditional religious establishment more precisely the fundamentalist forms that are common in both Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Alshugairi is a handsome and athletic person making him unique in style. In his television show, he effortlessly mixes the subject of deep religious commitment with hip but in a playful manner. An M.B.A from the best university such as California may be the pride of many people in the society. Contrary to him, he prefers his contribution in issues of religion more than he does with his educational achievement. He refers to Islam as a product that is good packaging in an efficient way. However, what makes Alshugairi stand out is the way in which he delivers his religious sentiments to the audience. Many consider his message as a sincere religious moderation that tends to be powerful than any other show presented on the television. He offers different ways that young Arabs can use to reconcile the painfully divided world between the East and West, the pleasure of the body and responsibility, freedom of the internet and the rigor of the mosque (Feffer, 2013). One of the youths stated that the television presenter enables them to get attached to religion since they tend to get detached and confused because of the modern way of life. In one of his biographies, he stated that he was inspired by the 2001 attacks that occurred while he was still in the U.S. besides, his approach to Islam religion is Orthodox where he feels that women should wear hijab as it is a show of respect to the unwritten constitution that guides them in their everyday lives.
